the first

there's some old guy with strands of white wire
that fall from his nose and chin
and a flock of gulls just circling scraps
and screeching the hunger
eerie eyes dim

and a can of coke all warm and flat
a newspaper, a banded hat
a book, a word, a sigh, a stare
and the man who put you there

there's a bus slowing down to a creaking halt
its old doors snapping open, shut
and devouring the midday suits
who've only got a mind for smut

and the people of the barren brook
who don't give a damn 'bout the average folk
with a shout, and a laugh
a half filled flask
a screech,a growl, a day that's fair
and the man who brought you there

and he's a mean machine gun goon hoodlum howlin' at the moon
driving down the freeway
stereo blastin' beats and bass
his friend joe's sticking his ass out the side
rolling grass and talking rubbish
to the sweet thing at his side
saying she's no good
and she's just thinking he's a goddamn fool
